Federally recognized tribes in the United States have the sovereign authority to provide for the transportation needs of
tribal members and others who travel through tribal lands. Safe roadways, bridges, airports, and other transportation
infrastructure are key to the development of healthy and sustainable tribal economies. As tribal economies grow, the
national economy grows and tribal communities become more self-sufficient.
Most tribal transportation programs are partially funded by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Indian Services,
Division of Transportation (BIA) or by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The seven Tribal Technical Assistance
Programs (TTAPs) are supported by the BIA and the FHWA and provide assistance to the tribal transportation programs.
On this website, you will find links to tribal transportation programs, federal agencies, and the TTAPs so that you will
be better able to increase the quality of transportation programs in your tribal community.
